FAQ
Straight answers to the questions we get most.
If your question is not here, call us. We would rather explain it once properly than have you sign something you don't understand.
Working with Fortwell
What does an independent broker actually do?+
We work for you, not a carrier. We build your submission, market it to the carriers most likely to write your class of business, present the options side by side, and stay involved through claims and renewal.
Does it cost more to use a broker?+
No. Broker compensation is built into the policy premium the same way it is when you buy direct. What changes is how many markets see your risk and how the coverage is structured.
How fast can I get a quote?+
Most standard commercial submissions come back within one to three business days once we have complete information. Complex or hard-to-place risks can take longer, and we tell you that up front.
What do you need from me to start?+
Business description, revenue, payroll or employee count, vehicle schedule if applicable, loss runs for the last three years, and any contract-required limits.
Coverage & certificates
How quickly can I get a certificate of insurance?+
Same business day in most cases, and often within the hour. Certificate turnaround is one of the main reasons clients move their book to us.
My contract requires specific limits and endorsements. Can you match them?+
Yes. Send us the insurance requirements exhibit from the contract and we place coverage that satisfies it, including additive insured, waiver of subrogation, and primary and non-contributory wording where required.
What happens if I have a claim?+
You call us first. We open the claim, push for reserve accuracy, participate in adjuster conversations, and make sure the settlement reflects the coverage you actually bought.
Amazon DSP & contractors
Do you handle Amazon DSP insurance requirements?+
Yes. We place auto liability, general liability, workers' compensation, and excess coverage that meets the program requirements, and we handle the endorsement and certificate steps the program expects.
Can you write coverage for a brand-new contracting business?+
Often, yes. New ventures are underwritten on the owner's experience, project types, and subcontractor practices. We know which carriers are open to new operations.
Which states do you write in?+
Fortwell is licensed in select states. Tell us where you operate and we will confirm licensing on the first call.
